AIC Record (and Beards) Finished!

As most of you who have been paying attention have already figured out, the new Alice In Chains album is finally complete. We've been in the studio since October, and since it all began we celebrated 6 major holidays, elected a new President of the United States, crowned new World Series and Super Bowl champs, endured fires, earthquakes, & blackouts in and around Los Angeles, took a 2 1/2 week break to go to Australia, and to cap it all off, William & Jerry finally euthanized their beards.

This long, arduous process is complete, and although there's still a lot of work to be done, the songs are in the can and that's the most important thing.

So what can I tell you when I look back on the last six months?

I can tell you that the monotony of 12 to 16 hour days in the studio can be broken up by multiple costumes & hair styles, hours and hours of dice games, any sort of dialogue delivered in a heavily accentuated southern drawl, and a slew of special guests dropping by the studio.

Most of all I can tell you that some amazing songs were written and recorded. From the heaviest riff-dripping gut puncher to the most sadly beautiful song I think this band has ever recorded, I honestly believe that this album will return Alice In Chains to the top of the hard rock heap.

So now the next few months are dedicated to things like album artwork, lining up interviews & press, shooting videos, planning tours, and figuring out whether to bury Jerry & William's beards at sea or donate them to science.

Hopefully these new songs will strike a chord and make a similar impact on all of you out there that were moved by this band in the first place. These songs have definitely done that with me, and frankly I'm getting pretty sick and tired of loving this stuff alone, so I can’t wait for it to be released so it'll become your favorite record of 2009 and we can discuss it at the shows.

So clear a slot in your CD shelf and schedule maternity leave from work in September, because the long drought will be over soon...

We arrived in Brisbane two days before the first show, which gave us all a little time to shake off the jet lag and get acclimated to the insanely humid conditions here.  Jerry, William, Sean and I went to a Koala sanctuary the day after we got in, and being able to check out and feed koalas and kangaroos was a cool experience to start things off with. Mike opted to stay back at the hotel and check out a few Coronas instead of a koala, but in his own way he interacted with wildlife too, as our hotel was absolutely overrun by nearly 100 band & crew guys also playing the festival. It can be amusing sometimes to watch other guests react to a bunch of dirtbag musicians sullying up the hotel, but this was off the charts. Usually it’s just us doing the sullying, but here in Brisbane it was us times 10, and all the poor businessmen and families caught in the middle of the tattoos and greasy hair and black t-shirts looked like they’d rather ask the concierge for a canister of pepper spray than directions to the zoo. 

With a day off and a small dose of Australia in us, we all moved on to day # 1 of the Soundwave Festival. Brisbane had been getting pounded with intermittent rain showers since we landed, but not long after we arrived at the festival site the skies cleared up and it turned out to be a nice afternoon. The two main stages are located side by side, so within a couple of minutes of one band finishing, the next band was up and running right next door. There were also 4 more stages scattered throughout the site, so there was always a band playing for the fans to check out. There’s something about a festival that brings out a handful of colorful characters too, and today was no exception, as I saw a guy and a girl decked out in full Viking regalia. I’m not really sure what that was all about, but I enjoyed it. 

Okay, lets crunch some numbers. Alice In Chains hasn’t played in Australia in over 15 years, they’ve played one live show in the last 13 months, and they’re breaking in a slew of new crew guys as well. A recipe for disaster?… Hardly. The crowd was going nuts before the guys even took the stage, and once they came out it was business as usual. The fans were screaming and singing along, the band sounded great, and an hour later gig # 1 was in the books. And a big question was answered as well. Would the guys be debuting any new material? Unfortunately, no. It didn’t seem like anyone minded too much though.

 So with one show under their belts, we were off to Sydney…

"Yeah, it's over now"...The 2008 AiC Fantasy Football season has come to a close, and Jerry "Aroma of Tacoma" Cantrell is this season's Big Baller. Tony's "Shameless Hopefuls" were smothered by the Aroma (209-181) in the finals..."Yeah, we pay our debt sometime". Tony may have lost his chance for bragging rights, but the autographed guitar is a pretty nice consolation prize for being top fan team in the league...Congratulations Tony! Now it's time for me to crawl out of my Commish Cave, and spend some time with my family until next September, when 8 more fans will get a chance to go up against Jerry & Mike for the AiC Fantasy crown.

As if the heavy snow wasn't enough, the Aroma in Tacoma got so thick this week, that Santa may have to avoid most of the Pacific Northwest this year. Jerry's "Aroma of Tacoma" piled up a 33 point lead on Tony's "Shameless Hopefuls" in the first week of the 2008 AiC Fantasy Football Championship (105-72). The "Hopefuls" need a Christmas miracle to pull off a week 2 comeback and catch JC now. Tony...join hands with your loved ones, and do your best Whoville "Dahoo Doray", Grinch Cantrell is just about to steal Christmas and the 2008 AiC Championship !

The AiC Fantasy League finals will be slugged out between Tony and his "Shameless Hopefuls" vs Jerry "The Aroma of Tacoma" Cantrell.

Tony's feeling no shame as he stuck it to the league's #1 seed Robert...his Shameless Hopefuls sautéed Robert's Mellow Mushrooms with a 2 week total of 197-183, and put an end to Robert's run for the guitar. The Shrooms had a hell of a season, but the Hopefuls peaked at just the right time to take him out. Box Score

There was plenty of football drama in Dallas all week, and it carried over into the AiC league. Gautam had a 7 pt lead over Jerry after week one, and things were looking pretty good for him week 2 going into Sunday night's Dallas vs NY game...after Jerry's entire roster played, Gautam was only down 10 pts, and still had Jason Witten, and Terrell Owens of the Cowboys left to play...surely they would easily amass 11 points between them and send Gautam to the finals! ....Uhhhh...3 pts for Owens, 4 pts for Witten? JC dodges a bullet, and heads to the finals 174-171...Gautam was last seen heading for Dallas mumbling something about "I'll give those crybaby pricks something to whine about!"...Tough break G. AiC Playoffs - Week 1 Semi-finals

After the first week of our 2 week semi-final, #4 seed Tony, and his Shameless Hopefuls seem to be handling the normally overpowering effects of our #1 seed Robert, and his Mellow Mushrooms. The Hopefuls are grinning ear to ear out front (111-90), but the Shrooms have the power to sneak up and lay a bad trip on ya just when the giggling starts. Stay tuned and see if Robert can cut into that 21 point lead....BOX SCORE

Our other semi-final matchup is a good old fashion barn burner. #3 seed Gautam's Whales n Wasps hold a slim 7 point lead over #2 seed Jerry's Aroma of Tacoma (89-82). Gautam better hope for a strong breeze, because Jerry's been hunkered down in the studio refusing to shower so the Aroma will be good and ripe for week 2. Jerry "The Aroma" Cantrell is gonna try to do something he's not accustomed to...disappoint a few fans! Sure Robert, Gautam and Tony may own every Alice album, and waited faithfully in line for concerts, but this is FANTASY FOOTBALL, and having seen first hand how JC competes, I can attest that until week 17 is over, they are mere slabs of meat standing in the way of victory! By the same token, Robert, Gautam and Tony may have thrown their fists adoringly into the air for the "Master of Wild Grungy Riffaroma", but for the next 4 weeks, they'll show Jerry the level of respect an 80's tribute band guitarist playing the Tacoma High prom gets! Normally, a shared love of AiC music bonds the fans on this site together, but there are 3 right now who'll be going deep into their "Your momma is so..." catalog for a few weeks. Thankfully there's a new record on the way with healing powers that will surely be needed when the fur stops flying!

Here we are in December, the holiday season is in full swing, and William & Jerry are just a few days away from recording vocals. Guitars and bass are heading down the home stretch, and although the drums are done, Sean is coming in almost every day to provide input and give full body massages to anyone he can get his hands on.

There's not a lot to report because it's pretty much like the movie Groundhog Day in here, just with a different soundtrack each day. Recording an album can be a long and laborious process. Play the song. Tune the guitar or bass. Play the song again. Tune again. Play a different part of the song with a different guitar. Tune again. Try something different on the bridge. Tune. Play a 12 string on the chorus. Tune. And so on and so on and so on…

Are you bored yet? Try doing it 'til two or three A.M. six days a week for three months and you'll be amazed that the upcoming album isn't just the sound of four guys smashing their heads against the wall in beautiful Dolby surround sound.

Although I'm still under a gag order concerning the material, I think I can get away with saying that this album will run the stylistic gamut as far as the songs are concerned.

A couple of uptempo crushers? Check.
A few droning mid-tempo head trips? Check.
A couple of radio friendly super catchy tunes? Check.
A pair of straight up white-knuckle mind-f*%# sonic roller coaster rides? Check.

Lyrically speaking, it's going to be more of what you've come to expect from Alice In Chains: rainbows, kitty cats, bubble gum, and skateboards. Words & songs that make you want to go to the mall and buy hair care products.

The further we get into this process, the more excited I get for it to see the light of day. The economy is a mess, record stores are closing down all over the country, and the music industry is a disaster, but I know a good song when I hear it, and this album is gonna be full of them.

Hopefully that, along with the support of all of you guys, will be enough to put this band back on top where it so rightfully belongs.

As some of you may or may not know, Mike Inez recently took part in IMV's (Interactive Music Video) instructional DVD series.

One part instruction, one part entertainment, Mike gives an in-depth lesson on how to play "A Little Bitter" and "Again". He also talks about how he got started in the music business, his influences, and the great artists he's played with throughout his career. Keep an eye out for special guest and longtime friend John Tempesta who rounds out the rhythm section.

The video will be available at most Guitar Centers nationwide. It will also be available online via IMVDVD.com as well as Amazon.com. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to charitable causes, one of which is Little Kids Rock. So while you're learning to shred, you're also helping some very deserving causes.

Where We're At…

Sean finished drums two weeks ago and we all celebrated by taking a few days off for Halloween. This also gave us time to have our molars refitted and let our internal organs settle back into place (drums are LOUD).

So now we're all buckled up and ready for a month or so of guitar & bass.

Jerry started off with what will more than likely be the first single off of the new album, and it's sick. The riff on this thing is just monsterously wrong, and yet so damn right. It's a classic Cantrell slice of aural evil that will crawl into your ears and lay little Alice eggs in your brain.

Much like the drums, the guitars and bass on this album are going to be dense and heavy and disgusting and beautiful. In other words, for those of you who have voiced concerns as to how the new stuff will sound, rest assured. This record will sound different for obvious reasons, but the musical spell this band put you under years ago is still as potent today as it was back in 1990, and I'm not just saying that because Jerry bought me breakfast this morning.

So what have we learned in the last month?

Well, we've learned that prolonged exposure at a close proximity to excessive drumming can result in hearing loss, jittery nerves, blurred vision, & slight bladder leakage. We've also learned that an incomplete song that only has guitars, bass, and drums laid down without being mixed or mastered can still be crushingly satisfying.

There you have it. Progress continues to be made, and piece by piece this album is coming together.

I hope all of you in the States got out & voted. God bless America, and God bless the sonic depravity that Alice In Chains is producing in the studio right now…

The first couple of weeks are now in the books, so here's a brief update.

Let's start off by answering a few lingering questions out there. For those of you who don't already know, the producer of the album is Nick Raskulinecz. Nick has produced the Foo Fighters, Trivium, & Rush just to name a few, and has also engineered a ton of records for other artists as well. There's a great engineer and studio team in place, so the band is in capable hands, everyone is in really good spirits, and the songs sound amazing.

However, recording an album can be a bit like painting your lawn and sitting back to watch the paint dry as the grass grows, so I'll spare you all the details of what's been going on.

In the control room of the studio there's a giant poster with a list of song titles with boxes next to them that get marked off as the work gets done. There are boxes for drums, bass, guitars, vocals, guitar solos, etc. This poster has 20 songs on it, and at this point we're about 2/3rds of the way done with drum tracking. Obviously not all 20 songs are going to be on the album, but they'll tackle that issue down the line.

I'm still not allowed to reveal much about the songs, but I can say this; there is some stuff here that in my opinion can and will stand alongside anything the band has done up to this point. There is some really strong material here, I just hope all those radio station program managers that fill the airwaves with some of the crap I've heard over the last few years will know what to do with a good rock song when it comes their way.

I also hope that the economy is in better shape when this album comes out next year so you don't have to sell your own bone marrow on ebay in order to afford it. Then again, after hearing these songs I'd say a little bone marrow for a new Alice In Chains record is actually a pretty good bargain.

Welcome to the new Alice In Chains dot com.

As you can see, a lot has changed here. To coincide with Alice In Chains entering the studio to record their first new album in over 13 years, the official website is getting a massive overhaul.

The site will continue to change and evolve over the course of the next several days and weeks and months, so please bookmark it and continue to check it several times a day until it becomes a distraction at home and begins to affect your performance at work.

As the band commences with the recording of the new album, there will be weekly updates on the site, giving you the inside scoop from the studio via photos, videos, and written accounts. This will continue for as long as the recording takes place, and if some snippets of new material happen to get posted along the way, so be it.

Also new to the site is the vault section, where all things Alice from all eras of Alice will live. It's pretty barren now, but we have a treasure trove of rare items and never before seen photos & video that will slowly build this page into what will eventually be recognized as the single greatest use of the internet since the inception of 1800dentist.com. You're also encouraged to submit photos and scans from your own collection to send to us. Pictures, posters, ticket stubs, cell phone video of Jerry buying smokes at 7-11: if we deem it worthy of inclusion in the vault, it'll have a home there for all to see.

In recognition of the upcoming elections here in America, and in the great spirit of democracy, the caste system has also been wiped out. All content will now be accessible to everyone. Membership will no longer be required to view content, read updates, or log onto the discussion boards.

Those of you who have frequented the boards over the last few years will obviously notice that they have been wiped clean of all former threads. This was an unfortunate side effect of the site overhaul, but please head over there and start the discussions up again.

One final note. The main purpose of this site is to serve the fans, so please let us know your thoughts. As we mentioned earlier, it's a work in progress, so your input is valuable in helping shape this site.

Soundwave Festival 2009

Alice in Chains returns to Australia for the first time in over a decade when they will join Nine Inch Nails, Alkaline Trio, and Lamb of God on 2009’s Soundwave Festival. The festival, now in it’s third year, will once again travel to Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, and Adelaide. This also marks Alice’s first set of shows since heading into the studio to record their new album.
